WACS 11th grader David Hoebener came to his band director, Mr. Chagnon, as a freshman two years ago with his laptop open, sharing that he had written a concert band piece inspired by Japanese pentatonic scales. David spent the rest of that year personally playing and recording each instrument's part individually into his computer's music software so that he could have an audio version of his composition.
Fast forward two years to this June's Senior Band Concernt, where Mr. Chagnon chose the theme of "Our home, Chautauqua", honoring music and musicians from our county. It was at this concert that David took to the podium, baton in hand, and as a Chautauqua composer he conducted the Westfield Wolverine Senior Band in the world premier of 'Ancient Tokyo' by David Hoebener.
The performance was remarkable. David's peers were thrilled to be a part of this special moment in time. The audience agreed and gave a standing ovation. Congratulations, David, we admire your musical talent and are so proud of this monumental accomplishment.
This message is for all 8th grade students: If you plan to play a Fall Sport this upcoming fall season, you need to see Mr. Huber to take your IMPACT test ASAP. You will not be able to start the season if your impact test is not completed.
This spring our 6th Grade Science Teacher, Lauren Nelson, attended the NSTA, National Science Teaching Association, conference in Denver, CO. This conference is one of the largest conferences focused exclusively on science and STEM teaching for K–20 teachers of science and includes members from around the world. The conference featured over a thousand peer-led sessions and workshops that directly apply to the work that Mrs. Nelson does in her classroom at Westfield Middle School. The focus of NSTA Denver24 included Instruction and Assessment, Implementing Standards, Student Learning and Inclusion, Teaching Strategies and Classroom Practice, Climate Science and Environmental Justice, Research to Practice, Connecting with Nature, & Leadership and Advocacy.
In addition to the professional learning at NSTA, Mrs. Nelson was a presenter with Dr. Mike Jabot, SUNY Fredonia; Lisa Brosnick, Buffalo State; and Paula Ferneza, E2CCB BOCES. The title of their presentation was "17 Great Ways to Connect the World to NGSS" with a focus on instruction and assessment, and implementing standards. Their session shared a methodology that teaches within the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and not just about them. The team shared how to connect NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards) to the sustainable goals around some of the most pressing challenges we face in society. Examples were even shared from our 6th grade classroom here at WACS. Attendees learned how to create student solutionaries in the classroom. Mrs. Nelson’s role in the presentation was to share an example of how this can be done with students in typical classrooms. Mrs. Nelson shared that “throughout the year, we have worked on a unit about microplastics right in our community. Our microplastics unit connected our science standards to the UN Sustainable Goals in a way that made sense and interested students, as well as allowing them to become the solutionary-- those in control of acting for change.”
We are proud of the way Mrs. Nelson has represented WACS on a national level, and the skillset that she brings to our middle school. We applaud her effort and dedication to science and STEM instruction, and her eagerness to cultivate a younger generation of forward thinking problem solvers.

This past weekend, our very own Carson Swanson attended a basketball camp run by Jay Bilas of ESPN, where Carson was awarded the camps toughest competitor, and Carson's team won the team championship and the 3 v 3 tournament at the camp. Special things are happening for Carson and we are excited to be part of it!
