A grateful shout-out to UNION RELIEF for sponsoring this month's STAR Reading Program with the fantastic books you see here. Thank you to our 5th graders for putting together an amazing virtual STAR Program for our elementary students. Sticking with our STAR habitat theme, they shared some really great information about DECIDUOUS FORESTS! Ask your elementary student what they learned about this habitat from watching their 5th grade friends' slideshow.

Good evening Westfield Families: We would like to provide an update as to the current status of the COVID – 19 cases in our District. To date, we have informed you of two cases of COVID – 19 in our middle school. The individuals involved include a staff member and a student. All contacts pertaining to these two cases have been notified. As a result of the precautionary measures taken over the past 24 hours, the Chautauqua County Department of Health identified a third case of COVID - 19 involving a middle school student in our District. All individuals involved have been contacted. This case is considered an off-site positive, meaning the person was believed not to be present in school during the infectious period. The student was last present in school on October 27, 2020. Please know we are taking the following actions: • We are continuing a high level of sanitation within our buildings. • We are in communication with families who have been impacted by these cases. As a result of our communication with the Department of Health and our assessment of these cases, we are planning to resume our hybrid learning model on Monday, November 9, 2020. If any unforeseen factors arise that prevent us from returning on November 9, we will contact you immediately. Please feel free to reach out with any questions. We are thankful for your patience as we assess these situations to ensure our actions are the best possible for our students and staff. Sincerely, Michael Cipolla Superintendent of Schools

Dear Westfield Parents and Guardians, Thank you for your feedback, questions and information shared throughout the past few weeks. Governor Andrew Cuomo, the NYS Department of Health (NYSDOH) and the NYS Education Department (NYSED) released detailed health and safety guidance for reopening schools; specifically, mandating that students be six (6) feet apart and wear face coverings in classrooms. As a result of the Governor's guidance on social distancing, we are working on a model that permits the greatest number of students to attend school as safely as possible. As we enter into the final stages of planning for the 2020-2021 school year, we are requesting some additional information from you related to your plans to pursue the option of remote learning. Specifically, we have developed an online survey for you to complete in order to indicate your plans to opt-in to WACS remote learning for the upcoming school year. The link for the survey is below. Once completed, a representative from our school will be in contact with you in the coming days to begin coordinating your child’s educational details for 2020-20201. Please submit a separate survey for each child in your household by Friday, August 14, 2020. It is important for us to hear from every family interested in remote learning so we can best prepare for our in-person enrollment. We thank you for your continued support as we strive to balance maximizing student learning in a safe and healthy environment. As always, please feel free to contact us with any questions that may arise. His announcement permits school districts to make the determination about how to open school buildings in September. We will continue the planning process which will include updating our plans for September. These updated plans will be communicated to you in the very near future. There will be additional meetings scheduled with our families and staff to review the updated plans and to gain further input. Please stay tuned for further information. The safety of our students and staff will remain our number one priority as we continue to work through this process. Have a wonderful weekend.

Good morning Westfield! We would like to provide clarification in response to the article posted in today's edition of The Observer. The article explored the topic of school resource officers in our county. WACS indeed has a fully funded school resource officer in partnership with the Westfield Police Department for the 2020-2021 school year. This position provides support to our school community and our students. Have a wonderful weekend WACS.

Congratulations to Westfield's first two Seal of Biliteracy Graduates, Katie Bodenmiller and Eliora Brown. This prestigious program is formal recognition of students who have studied and attained a high level of proficiency in two or more languages (English plus a Foreign Language) by high school graduation. This program requires students to complete a portfolio of carefully designed tasks that allow them to demonstrate their proficiency, and culminates in a formal presentation of their research in both languages to a bilingual panel. Westfield is one of only a handful of schools across the region to offer this honors program to students and we are so proud of our recipients and their dedication to this honor. Congratulations to the senior recipients, Katie Bodenmiller and Eliora Brown, and to the junior recipients, Emma Heim and Elber Lopez Hernandez.

Good morning WACS! We would like to share this powerful resource with you that has been recently shared in communities. Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced that New York school facilities will remain closed for the remainder of the 2019-20 academic year. The Governor will make a decision about summer school by the end of May. As we look to the future, we must think about what a return to school buildings might look like and how best to support students, families and staff. We know that we are stronger together. We need all voices to be heard on this important matter. Please participate in a statewide virtual conversation about reopening schools. You will be able to read and rate other participants' responses. Based on those ratings, the most important thoughts will rise to the top. All contributions are anonymous. This is a statewide exchange facilitated by the 37 New York BOCES (Boards of Cooperative Educational Services). The exchange results will be shared with our elected officials so that they will have a more global understanding of the thoughts and ideas our community members have about returning to in-person schooling. We encourage everyone to use the link below to share your thoughts and help evaluate the critical issues. If English is not your first language, there is a translation feature. Thought Exchange Link: https://my.thoughtexchange.com/333518046 Your BOCES is Erie 2 (Erie-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus) Thank you in advance for your participation.

Dear WACS Families: In compliance with the Governor’s order to continue school closures through April 14, WACS will continue to provide education remotely. This order requires schools to provide education during our previously scheduled recess. We will provide education for the duration of our scheduled recess and continue to support our families. Our staff will maintain regular communication with students and families. We continue to monitor the health crisis and will notify our families of any changes that may occur. Our food service team and transportation teams are preparing meals for our students to extend through our recess. Families will receive a larger portion of food the week prior to meet the nutritional needs of our students during the week of April 13. If possible, please be prepared with a box or cooler located on your porch for our staff to place that food inside. You will also want to be prepared to store this quantity of food. If you have not signed up to receive meals for your student(s), please contact 326-2196 for assistance. Please continue to visit our Facebook page, webpage and listen for our voice messaging system to receive updates. Be well and safe Westfield. Michael Cipolla – Superintendent of Schools

While our students are not coming to and from school, you are probably still seeing our buses and bus drivers around. They have been busy with our food service crew delivering breakfast and lunch to students around our community Monday through Friday. If you happen to see them out and about, please give them a friendly wave as they are truly making a difference in our community during this unprecedented time. We sure are Westfield strong! 🚌💙
